Weapons Storage

Currently, we are NOT providing this service due to the current social distancing directives. We will update this web page when we return to offering this service.

The University of Tennessee Police Department offers secure, free weapons storage for students, staff, and faculty living in university housing. Weapons which are brought to campus by students, staff, and faculty for sporting purposes must be checked in and stored with the UTPD.

Weapons are stored and released by appointment only.

Weapons Storage
Contact UTPD at 865-974-3114 to request and schedule an appointment for weapon drop off. Weapons may be dropped off at any time (twenty-four hours per day) by appointment only.

Weapons Release
Weapons are released by appointment only, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please call 865-974-3114 and ask for Sgt. Travis Johnson to schedule an appointment. It is suggested that you call twenty-four hours prior to picking up a weapon.

Pursuant to TCA 39-17-1309 it is a felony offense for any person to carry a weapon on university property. This applies even to individuals who possess a valid Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit. Individuals who possess these permits are NOT authorized to carry a weapon on any university-owned or controlled property.

The UT Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual
This manual contains work rules that apply to staff and faculty. “Unauthorized possession of firearms, explosive materials, or other lethal materials on university premises” is a violation of university work rules.

The student handbook prohibits “possession, while on university-owned or controlled property, or at university-sponsored or supervised activities, of any weapon such as, but not limited to, rifles, shotguns, ammunition, handguns, and air guns, including explosives such as firecrackers, unless authorized in writing by the Chief of Police of The University of Tennessee Police Department.”
