Tom Freels, a retired UT Police Department captain who served the university for almost 40 years, passed away on July 31. He was 76.
Freels joined the university in November 1969 and served in various capacities at UTPD including in special events and as a training lieutenant.
The Knoxville native was an honorary lifetime member of the University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Band, who he escorted from the 1980’s until his last bowl trip in 2007. He retired from UTPD in June 2007 after 37 years of service.
Freels’ family and friends will gather at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 6, at Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Highway. The group will go in procession to Greenwood Cemetery, 3500 Tazewell Pike, for an 11 a.m. graveside service.
UTPD Lieutenant Jim Underwood and Corporal Brad Duerr will present a flag to the family in honor of Freels for his years of service to the UT Police Department.
