UTPD Officers to Read to Children as Part of ‘Read Across America Day’

University of Tennessee Police Department officers will share their love of books with UT’s littlest community members on Friday, March 1.

From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., about a dozen UTPD officers and department staff will take turns reading to the children at the UT Early Learning Center, 1206 White Avenue.

They also will talk to the youngsters about opportunities that come with careers in law enforcement. The White Avenue location of the Early Learning Center is next to UTPD.

“The children wave to us whenever we pass by, and I thought it would be fun for police officers to interact with them and hopefully leave them with a positive and lasting impression,” said UTPD Officer Mike Williams, a former high school and elementary school assistant principal who organized the effort.

The initiative is part of Read Across America Day, an annual nationwide reading celebration on March 2 in honor of children’s author Dr. Seuss. Because the date falls on a weekend, UTPD will commemorate the day on Friday, March 1.
